What is the best way to get your company CEO, COO or other senior leader to understand and use social media networks?

I teach social and do it, but always marvel at the innovative ways people use to entice and incent c-suite organization leaders into using, and therefore better understanding social media.

CEO - Show the person how it will improve the bottom line

COO - Show the person how it will improve operations.

Other Senior Leaders - Show them how it will improve their functional organization performance.

The job of a CEO is to produce a positive return for investors. A CEO can do everything else incorrectly but if he/she delivers that return, then that CEO is successful. You'll have to develop and demonstrate linkage between social media and ROI - it will have to be measurable in accounting terminology, preferably in the form of an income statement and balance sheet. Otherwise, you're just another academian who doesn't speak the language of business.

The best way is to show CEO how well his competitors are performing with social media. Show him why are competitors performing well. Make clear the gap. Present a very simple plan to create value catching the gap. Translate this to numbers and schedule. Establish very clear map to ROI.

Steve,

Get them to tell you why they want to understand them. If it's just because people tell them they should there's no point.

If they have a good understanding of why they want to use social media then helping them to learn how to use them is the easy part.

Dear Steve,

Bottom line, they are both interested in the wealth of the company and the stockholders.

ROI might be sometimes hard to calculate so don't get carried into this discussion. On of the best counter-arguments would be that they do not calculate the ROI on their smartphones (by David M. Scott).

There are 3 factors, to my opinion, that will affect the bottom line and that you should use:

1. Connection to the customers. By engaging with them on social media, you will strengthen their emotional connection to you brand an by that you will increase brand loyalty, etc.

2. Increasing leads - You can find many statistics about the amount of people that are active on social media networks. That is a great opportunity to create leads and to increase your sales through these networks.

3. Competition - Although you shouldn't be doing what they are doing, managers love it when you notice competition and when you cans how them how they can be better than the competitors ;-)
